Don’t stop climbing, God has good things in store for you!

cropped-sawtooth-mountians11.jpgI began experiencing a whole new adventure growing up once we had moved to a ranch nestled in the midst of some of the most gorgeous mountainous landscape in central Idaho. Though in the beginning, this previous flatlander, was intimidating and claustrophobic, it soon became one of the greatest seasons of my younger life. It was through this experience that I learned many truths from nature and the mountains around. The first was that climbing a mountain is much like going through life, tough at times.

I think most of us can say there have been some mountain peaks and some valleys along our life’s journey. It is like the natural process when you climb to the summit of a literal mountain, you go through some valleys and ravines to get to the more elevated peaks. There seems to always be another valley before another peak, as we move higher and achieve greater heights. Existing in the lower bottoms of life or even camping in the higher plateaus might be more convenient and a whole lot easier, but there is no greater adventure or achievement then getting to the top. If you stay comfortable and not climb you will never get to see the incredible view or breath the fresh air that you do from the summit.

I believe that many, even though they haven’t reached their destiny have made some significant progress as they have pursued God’s will for their lives. We must realize that our walk of faith is a process and doesn’t come over night. Going forward in faith will never be defined as “smooth and easy” but it does hold a promise of achieving Godly rewards. (1 Cor 9:25-26)

Speaking to Christians in Corinth Paul relates our walk of faith as running a race to win not to just nonchalantly participating in it. (vs 24) Also, Paul at the end of his life describes his own journey in 2 Tim 4:7-8 saying, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness”. Paul shares some of his testimony and journey in 2 Cor 11:23-28, where he lists what he had gone through. His words and life experiences confirm the fact that our journey of faith is anything but apathetical or uneventful, having what we would describe as ups and downs along the way.

If we are not focused during these times in the valleys they can seem like “failures or setbacks”, but if we keep our eyes on Jesus as our Good Shepherd and are surrendered to His will, then we can stand in confidence as overcomers. Paul declares this in Phil 4:13 where he says, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.

Even when we have gone through extreme and unpleasant situations along life’s climb we can come out better and stronger in our faith on the other side. These low points allow us to see and experience His faithfulness as He takes us by the hand and leads us, as a loving shepherd, through the shadows of death into green lush pastures. (Ps 23)

In Heb10:35-36 Paul encourages the believers to not cast their confidence in Christ away, but to endure in their faith and finish the will of God. Not being hindered by anything that would enslave us and stop us from completing our journey or “running the race” of faith. (1 Cor 9:25) We do this by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who is the author and finisher of our faith. (Heb 12:2) So don’t Stop Climbing Now! God has good things in store for you!

A life of prayer is a life of Victory!

praying in churchA life of prayer is a life of power! The degree of power in our life is a direct reflection of our prayer life and habits. If you find weakness and fatigue in your faith then you can be sure that you are weak and impotent in prayer. The deeper our intimacy with God the stronger our prayer life will be. Deuteronomy 4:29 says, “But from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.” Our prayer life is strengthened as we get to know Him experientially and understand who He is.

In times of spiritual dryness, we need to be saturated in God. In Topeka, Kansas just before Christmas of 1900, Charles F. Parham instructed the forty students at Bethel College to study the scriptures, to determine what would be considered the New Testament evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which they did. Then these students began to pray fervently that they might experience this same New Testament experience.

Clare Davis in her book, The Move of God writes of this experience. On the watch-night of 1901, they had a hallowed time of prayer for God’s blessings to be upon them in the coming year. During the first day of 1901 the Spirit of the Lord was with them in a marked way, stilling hearts to wait upon Him for greater things. The spirit of prayer was

God doesn’t want you to go through life with powerless prayers but being filled with the life changing power of the Holy Spirit.

upon them in the evening, and about 11:00 p.m., one of the students, Agnes Ozman, asked for prayer that she might receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. As the students laid hands on her she began to be filled with more of God. She later stated, “I had the added joy that my heart longed for, and a depth of the presence of the Lord within, that I never knew before. It was as if rivers of living water were proceeding from my innermost being.” Days later Parham, himself and soon all of the students received the Holy Spirit. The news spread quickly and many people were filled with this wonderful outpouring of the Holy Ghost. Parham went to Houston and began to teach this Book of Acts experience.”

God wants every believer to hunger for more of Him. Just as these students desired to experience the fullness of the power of the Holy Spirit, you and I need to come to that same place of hunger for more of God. The apostle Paul wrote to young Timothy

Our prayer life is strengthened as we get to know Him experientially and understand who He is

saying, “I desire therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting,” (I Tim. 2:8). This isn’t for a select few but for every believer. God wants all Christians to be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit so that they can pray effective prayers.

God has so much more for each of His children. He doesn’t want you to go through life verily getting through with powerless prayers but being filled with the life changing power of the Holy Spirit. We need to make powerful prayer a way of life. It’s our life source and spiritual umbilical cord. What’s holding you back today? I encourage you to take time out of your busy schedule and pray, asking God to give you everything He has for you. There’s great power in prayer.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place?

images-7The multitudes of Israelites made their way through the wildness as they headed to worship their God. These former slaves who had never walked with their heads up, now for the first time walk as free, healthy and blessed people. In a matter of hours their world had been totally turned right side up as the God of their fathers delivered them through signs and wonders at the hands of Moses. Words can’t express the feelings of gratitude that these mothers, fathers and children were experiencing as they made their way through the wilderness to give glory and worship to their God.

But then, we see God instructs Moses in Ex.14:1-2, to turn the Israelites and have them “camp before Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea”. In effect the children of Israel were asked to backtrack and go back in the same direction that

Being in a tight spot without Christ leads to failure, but if we have Christ, there will be deliverance and victory   (tweet)

they had just traveled. Their path would take them in a direction placing them with the Red Sea on one side, and the wilderness and mountains on the other sides. In other words they were going to be in a predicament. This new encampment would put them in a less than vulnerable place before the enemy who was now pursuing them. The children of God were now between a rock and a hard place. What was God up to anyway?

Before these once shackled ex-slaves could even begin to enjoy their freedom, the dust from Pharaohs six hundred chariots and horsemen gave signal of their change of mind and fast arrival to kill and destroy them.(Vs.7-9) In Ex.14:10 it says that God’s children became greatly afraid when they saw the coming Egyptian army.

Maybe the complaints and murmuring of the Israelites were true, that there wasn’t enough graves in Egypt, so Moses brought them to the wilderness to die (Vs.11-15) or was God up to something? It says in Ex 14:4 that God said, “I will gain honor over Pharaoh … that the Egyptians may know that I am the Lord.” We see that

At the Red Sea God would use the vessel of deliverance for his children to also destroy the Egyptian army.    (tweet)

God planned to show that He was God almighty not only to His covenant people but to their enemies also. God had set up this whole scenario for His purposes!

Moses encouraged the people in vs. 13-14 saying, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord”. He goes on to say that after God fights for them that they will never see this enemy again.

Even with the hopeless circumstances to the natural eye, God’s word was to “go forward”! But how could they? The impassable Red Sea was there, and this was way before the story of Peter walking on the water. God had it all planned out and would use the vessel of deliverance for his children to also destroy the Egyptian Continue reading

Roll Up Your Sleeves and Fight Vultures!

imagesNot only is the story of Abram fighting vultures away from his sacrifices captivating in Gen 15, but also has helped me in my walk with the Lord over the years. It demonstrates that we have a responsibility to keep our commitments to God as living sacrifices. This story in brief shows God revealing His promise to Abram through a covenant that both agree upon. Also in Deut. 7:9 Moses shares about God’s covenant, “Therefore know that … God (is) faithful … who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments”.

Growing up we have all had childish promises and agreement as friends. Whether it’s a promise to be best friends forever or a promise to keep a secret we have experienced them. But, it’s not until we get older in our life’s journey that we really

Man has proven his inability to keep any agreement without God’s grace and empowerment.   (text)

understand how common covenants and promises between individuals have been throughout history. They were used for territories, peace treaties and passage rights through other lands. Today, we use them in our everyday lives, such as marriage, loans, jobs and etc. Even though most looked much different, all were based on the philosophy of a serious promise. They came with the agreement that if one side or both ever break the agreement it could bring severe consequences.

In the scripture we see how God’s love for His people is portrayed through His unfolding of His purposes through the making of covenants to individuals through out the ages. Looking at the 9 covenants in scripture give us understanding that God who is the originator of His promises reveal that He is a covenant-making God. He has the right to set up the conditions in which man can enter into or maintain the covenant. He is also a covenant- keeping God. Once He makes covenant with us He will not Continue reading

Getting the Hindrances Out of your life

Felsengruppe Externsteine im Teutoburger Wald bei Horn-Bad Meinberg, Nordrhein-WestfalenEager to get on the way, we loaded the car and began our journey. The crisp Sunday morning couldn’t have been any more perfect. We were scheduled to minister in a church on the south side of Chicago that morning. So we got an early start for the trip from Milwaukee, to insure plenty of time to get there.

We had already gone a good distance when all of a sudden there was a loud noise followed by a lot of shaking. We pulled over to the side of the road only to find the tire was shredded to pieces. Surprisingly, it only took a few minutes to grab the spare and get back in the car heading for Chicago. This little setback seemed only to confirm to us that God had great plans in store for the meeting ahead.

Halfway to our destination, another loud noise came from the tire that I had just changed twenty miles earlier. The car began to shake in the same manner it did earlier. Once again, I pulled off the road and took a look at the tire, finding that it was also flat and ripped to shreds. Knowing that we were all out of spare tires, I began to get a little worked up and agitated. Yet, we began to feel more than ever that it was God’s will for us to be at that meeting. Even though it now looked as if something was hindering us. We began to be stirred up in our faith and began asking the Lord to move in the meeting. Before I could finish the prayer, a car pulled in behind us to help. To Continue reading

Seeing with Eyes of Faith

465104663Are you a person who knows how to pray with expectant faith? In James 5:16–18, Elijah was not superhuman, but was an ordinary person like us. The scripture goes on to say that he prayed earnestly that it would not rain and for three and a half years it did not rain, not even one drop. Then, in verse 18 it says, “He prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.”

Looking at this story a little bit closer in I Kings 18:41–45 we see, Elijah told Ahab to go back to his kingdom to eat and drink, because in the Spirit there was “the sound of coming rain. Elijah knew what the will of the Lord was for that season, even though it had been a drought for three and a half years. He had been sent by the Lord to declare there was the sound of abundance of rain coming in the land. Now

We must pray with expectancy and confidence as we see with the eyes of faith, and hear with the ears of the Spirit.       (tweet)

, Elijah had just witnessed the power of God in magnificent force on top of Mount Carmel where God had accepted Elijah’s sacrifice before all Israel.

Now, Elijah is back on top of the mount after he had declared the coming of rain to the king. It says that he knelt down in a praying position and I believe, like it says in James, that he prayed with expectancy. Telling his servant to go and look for the coming rain clouds seven times. Six times the servant came back saying, “There is nothing in the sky.” But on the seventh Continue reading

Who’s Going to Blow the Trumpet?

trumpetThe abrupt and sometimes screeching sounds of the trumpet would definitely wake all that were sleeping. Even though some would put their heads under pillows and others would moan at the startling noise, the job of arousing the sleeping was done. It was my friend who had what we referred to as the privilege to blow the trumpet at “Kids Camp”. He was admired by some and despised by others. One morning I was given permission to go with my friend to blow the morning trumpet where I quickly realized it wasn’t just a fun time, but was a serious job with huge responsibility. If we overslept or were late there could be serious consequences for many people.

Whether it’s a city’s tornado siren or all the way down to a household security system, the sounding of alarms have been strategic in guiding people throughout our society for many years. The scriptures themselves reveal the importance of sounding the trumpet or alarm.

It’s time to take our head out of the sand and blow the trumpet of truth in our land.  (tweet)

In the book of Joel we read where the prophet says, “Blow the trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm in My holy mountain!” In the midst of judgment and devastation in the southern kingdom the prophet Joel exhorts Judah not to get side tracked at their current tough situation but to sound the alarm. Gathering the people together to fast and cry out to God. They were moving away from the ways of God and now being called to return back to the Lord.

In the same manner the church is called to be a trumpeter to our generation. It says in Isa 58:1 “Cry aloud, spare not; Lift up your voice like a trumpet; Tell My people their transgression”. We have been commissioned to be God’s alarm in the earth.

It’s time to take a stand and blow the trumpet of truth in our land. It doesn’t take a brain scientist to diagnose the deteriorating symptoms in America as the result of self-indulgence and rejecting God’s statues.

We are not responsible in how they respond to our message but we will be held responsible if we do not sound the alarm!    (tweet)

We live in a time of history where confusion and immorality run rampant and is becoming the norm. Therefore, it’s time for every believer to get their head out of the sand and be about God’s business. God is calling His people to shout the warning cry and wake up those that have fallen asleep spiritually. We must line Continue reading

Called to be a Voice in the Wilderness

mlk_speech200-e6f9328d7f9b491c0a5dbcfccba1993f18ec856f-s600-c85In the midst of a busy diner the manager who evidently is having a rough and stressful day, begins to down grade and insult a breastfeeding young mother. The belligerent manager assumes that she is disturbing other customers around her and proceeds to kick her out of the establishment. As the tension in the room rises and different customers begin to react, some try to ignore what’s going on and others just shake their heads while out of the blue a young man stands up for justice and defends the young mother.

Then out of nowhere, enters the news correspondent John Quinones and his camera crew to interview onlookers. To everyone’s surprise they had been apart of the filming of a popular TV show. The actors are revealed to the stunned customers and shown the hidden camera. “What Would You Do?” is an intriguing television show that holds the watchers attention and makes one wonder what they themselves would do in a situation such as is being portrayed in each episode. The different weekly subject of the show always gives place to how different onlookers will each respond. More often then not people turn there back on justice and standing up to defend the defenseless.

We will either be a voice crying in the wilderness or in the wilderness crying for a voice! (tweet)

We read in the Gospel of Matthew about a man who was called by God. He came preaching in the wilderness. It defines him by saying in Matt 3:3, “the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight”.           John was a messenger of hope to a people in a spiritually dry and desolate land. Though he might not have looked the part, being clothed in camel’s hair synched up with a leather belt and munching on wild honey covered locust. God had anointed John the Baptist to be a voice to that generation. He was sent to sound an alarm and to wake up the apathetical church.

We are ambassadors for Christ, so Stand Up, Speak Up and be His voice! (tweet)

Down through history God has raised up voices to bring hope and justice to our land. One such voice was a young preacher named Martin Luther King, Jr. Along with being a minister he was an activist, humanitarian, and lead in the Civil Rights movement. He became a voice for justice to his generation. His Christian beliefs motivated and fueled the advancement in using nonviolent actions. Though he was wrongly assassinated his message of hoped lived on and produced fruits of righteousness.

Another voice in the midst of a spiritual wilderness and horrific injustice was Dietrich Bonhoeffer. As a German pastor he opposed the evil conquest of the Nazi regime. He was known for being openly vocal and courageous concerning his opposition to Hitler’s persecution and programs of euthanasia and genocide against the Jewish people. He soon was arrested and imprisoned which ultimately lead to being accused for being associated with the plot to assassinate Hitler. On April 9, 1945 Bonhoeffer and others were executed by hanging shortly before the Nazi regime collapsed and came to an end.

The scriptures declare in Rev 12:11, that the believers shall overcome the onslaught of the evil one through Christ’s blood, which also gives them a confidence for the greater glory, not loving their lives even unto death. God is still calling you and I to be a voice in the wilderness of our day for justice and righteousness. Paul declares that we are ambassadors for Christ, so Stand Up, Speak Up and be His voice! (Cor 5:20)

Your Love Letter Still Moves Me!

95465434The envelopes are getting tattered and the ink is starting to fade. But yet I find myself pulling out those priceless letters I have kept for so many years. The goose bumps go up my spine every time I reread the love letters my wife sent me when we were dating. The words keep melting my heart time after time, whether from a week or decades ago, I am moved by the words she wrote to me.

I think you can relate, right? It might have been a note from your first real girl or boy friend or even from a parent or grandparent. But words of love still penetrate us. There is just something about love communicated that moves us and brightens our days.

So how long has it been since you have taken His love letter down from the shelf or out of the drawer and blew the dust off of it? It’s probably time to read again God’s love letter to you. How much more than notes from a sweetheart should our Creator’s words of love move us?

He has you on His mind and penned His words of love to you. (tweet)

He has you on His mind and penned His words of love to you. Not just a one liner or quick note, but thousands of words. We read the words of the Psalmist in Ps 40:5 saying, “Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted …they are more than can be numbered”. But, so often we push them off as out of date, non-relevant or even unbelievable. The Bible in short is God communicating His love, His purpose and His destiny for us. Jer 29:11-12 says His thoughts towards us are “of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope”.

God’s love letter to us, the Bible, is more than a good history book. Better than any other book of poetry and so much more than a list of religious “do’s and don’ts”. The God of all creation is madly in love with you! God loves you! That gives me chills just saying it! His unconditional love for us is beyond any “so called” expression of love we might have experienced from others. It is deeper, wider and taller than anything else. Like it says in Eph 3:18-19, “that you… may be able to comprehend … what is the width and length and depth and height to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge”.

You can feel the love flowing all through the Bible. It reveals how He demonstrated His great love for us by sending Christ to die in our place while we were still sinners. (Rom 5:8) God himself declares that His word will never just fade away. And totally opposite of the politician’s words and promises, God’s word will not return as empty promises. In Isaiah 55 we read, “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void”.

The God of all creation is madly in love with you!   (tweet)

In Rom 8:34 we read with a long list of different things, that nothing can separate us from God’s love. God is madly in love with you! There’s nothing that you can do to separate yourself from His love. Even when we turn our backs on Him, our Heavenly Father continues to look for us and stands with His arms outstretched for our return. So let me ask you, “why do so many people refuse to embrace His love and choose to live a life of consequences?” I just don’t get it!

Help, There’s Water in my Boat!

562785703Doesn’t it seem to come crashing in all at once? The storms of life, such as, a vehicle breaking down unexpectedly and maybe being laid off your job or even a death of a loved one can set your world in turmoil. Life at times can become very overwhelming to say the least. The Psalmist says in Ps 107:28-29 says, “they cry out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses. He calms the storm, So that its waves are still. “NKJV

When God’s people have a right understanding and trust in their Heavenly Father they will cry out to Him in what I call storms of life, with confidence of His leadership. Yet on the other hand, when God’s people or those that have been around church most of their lives, but are shallow in their understanding will be disillusioned and possibly offended at the Lord.

It’s when we begin to look at the waves and wind that our eyes get off of Jesus and fixed on the circumstances around us.        (tweet)

The disciples were faced with this scenario in Mk 4:37-41, where it says a great storm arose as Jesus and his disciples were traveling across in a fishing boat one evening. Jesus had just finished ministering to the multitudes about growing in the things of God and encouraged His disciples to go to the other side with Him. And wouldn’t you know it, in the midst of their journey arises a great storm. The wind began to blow and the waves beat against the boat, filling it with water. Water in your boat is never good and would make most passengers very uncomfortable. Well, the disciples being concerned came to inform Jesus that they had a major crisis. The story progresses letting us know that they found Him at the stern of the boat sleeping on a pillow. In their dismays they woke Him with fear in their voice, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing? In other words, because Jesus was at peace and

comfortably sleeping, they thought He didn’t care whether they perished or not. But Jesus answered their accusations by speaking peace and a calmness to this storm. He then addressed them asking why they were so fearful and had no faith? He was letting them know if they would have really trusted in His guidance there was no reason for fear because He will bring peace to the storm.

More than not, we all fall into that same category as the disciples when in the midst of our storms. Unfortunately, we also at times can get offended at Jesus when we aren’t confident in His leadership. We forget that He is the one that speaks peace to storms and everything becomes calm. Jesus wants us to find the same place of peace in the midst of chaos that the disciples found Him in. Not in a pit of denial but a place of total confidence and trust. He wants you to have peace in the midst of the storms of life. In Isaiah 26:3 we are exhorted that if we keep our eyes on Him, He will keep us in perfect Peace.

It’s when we begin to look at the waves and wind that our eyes get off of Jesus and fixed on the circumstances around us. Peter had great faith in Matt. 14:24-31 when he stepped out of the boat in obedience to the word of Jesus. But it was when he began to focus on the storm that his lack of faith began to sink him.

The Paralyzing Grip of Fear!

Fear1Ten out of the twelve spies who went into the Promised Land saw the inhabitants and were gripped by fear. It was a tormenting fear that not only skewed their vision but spread to many others. The Biblical account that we read in Num. 13:26-30 continues to let us know that the other two, Joshua and Caleb, had an attitude of a warrior. These two did not succumb to spreading fear but kept their eyes on God’s promises and declared with boldness, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it,”. Their tenacious heart revealed their victorious attitude for the battle that lay before them. Yet, the majority of the spies were affected by fear just like a big part of God’s people.

Let me share with you six facts about fear that every believer should know: First, fear is a tactic of the enemy that will grip and paralyze you. Fear is your imagination running wild. It asks the question, “What if?” and answers with the worst-case scenario, picturing a future without God’s Intervention.

Fear is a lack of understanding in who God is, as well as, a lack of trust in Him. (tweet)

Second, fear will stop you from being effective for God. Have you ever seen someone who is afraid to try anything new? What about your child and broccoli? All the disciples were in the boat but only Peter ventured out and walked on the water (Matt. 14:29). Fear held the others back from having that same supernatural testimony. Too often we are hindered from moving forward in God because of this enemy.

Third, fear can spread to other believers and limit their impact. In Num. 14:1 it reads, “So all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried”. Why did they cry? Because fear had spread to everyone who heard the spies say that they lacked the strength to go up against their enemy. Fear will sweep across others like a wildfire on a dry prairie.

Fear held the other disciples back from having the same supernatural testimony as Peter who walked on the water.   (tweet)

Fourth, fear is a serious defect in a warrior. In Deuteronomy 20:8 the commanders were suppose to ask their troops, “What man is there who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest the heart of his brethren faint like his heart.” Being fearful and faint-hearted will affect and impact many. The fainthearted Christian will melt in the face of a spiritual battle.

Fifth, fear brings bondage. Romans 8:14-15 declares, “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear…” Many Christians walk around in bondage because they live in fear. Fear is a lack of understanding in who God is, as well as, a lack of trust in Him.

Sixth, fear is a torment that can hold you back from fulfilling God’s purposes. Elisha’s servant was overcome by fear when he thought he was outnumbered by the encircling enemy (II Kings 6:15). The apostle John assures us, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love,” (I Jn. 4:18). A Christian who is tormented by fear is a Christian who is not grounded in God’s love.

Knowing these six crucial points about fear will help you not be distracted from serving the Lord. A prayer warrior must be aware of the effects of fear in the realm of intercession. If fear grips us as we move into spiritual warfare then we will be limited in our prayers and impact to those around us.

The Eye of the Tiger!

589218387The movie Braveheart chronicles Sir William Wallace’s fight against England’s oppression for Scotland’s freedom. It illustrates the heart of a warrior. Wallace’s grassroots army lined up for battle against the mocking English and Wallace inspired his army with a cry for freedom. It was a rallying call for justice. I don’t think I am alone in saying that I was stirred in the depths of my being. That scene made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Numbers 25:6-11 tells how Phinehas, the grandson of Aaron the priest, displayed this same fervor and passion for justice. When many were whoring themselves, he along with others was at the temple gate

When deteriorating circumstances are running rampant, they demand drastic and bold actions to combat vicious spreading of evil  (tweet)

crying out to the Lord. He ran to the offense and passionately thrust a javelin through the violating individuals. This bold, and what some might think seemed to be overly drastic, action was pronounced by God as righteous and stopped the destruction among the nation. It’s evident that Phinehas had a warrior’s heart. When he saw evil creeping in and overtaking his family, friends and Nation, he turned back God’s wrath against them. Scripture tells us that his actions were motivated with the zeal of God. He had the heart of God and it manifested through his attitude toward evil. When deteriorating circumstances are running rampant, they demand drastic and bold actions to combat viciously spreading evil.

Do you remember the scene in the classic movie “Rocky” where his coach tells the apathetical and lethargic boxer that he lost the eye of the tiger? The coach was referring to Rocky not having an attitude of a warrior. He had lost his focus and zeal for victory. It is only when we have the “eye of the tiger” that we become victorious in our spiritual battle as William Wallace and Phinehas were.

We must never allow ourselves to think that we are not in a spiritual battle. We must realize that spiritual warfare will be a big part of our Christian life. The passage in Deuteronomy 20 says we should not be afraid when we see the tactics and onslaught of the enemy. When we are overcome with fear we agree with the enemy’s portrayal of himself as

Through focusing on his God and His promises, David was able to stand strong and defeat the mocking giant.     (tweet)

mightier than our God. Verse three continues exhorting the children of Israel as they go into battle saying, “Do not let your heart faint, do not be afraid, and do not tremble or be terrified because of them; for the Lord your God is He who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.”

In 1 Sam17: it says that each day Israel’s army positioned itself for battle and when the Philistine giant mocked their God and threatened them, they trembled with fear. But, Goliath did not deter and embed fear in young David’s heart. Through focusing on his God and His promises, David was able to stand strong and defeat this mocking giant. His attitude reflected his confidence and zeal for God. The result of this young shepherd boy defeating this giant was that the whole nation was motivated with a confidence and attitude to win the victory that day.

Any time that we do not understand who we are in Christ and believe the enemy’s lies we will be defeated within ourselves. God wants His children to have an “eye of the tiger” or attitude of victory as they contend in spiritual warfare.

Ready or Not We are in a Battle!

sb10062366k-001Like it or not, as a believer, you are in a battle! Every person born into this world is immersed into spiritual warfare. Having been plunged into the conflict of the ages, we are not exempt nor can we be neutral. Either the forces of evil will trample us or we will be victorious through our spiritual warfare—winning souls, changing society, influencing history and helping establish God’s Kingdom. I’m not talking about being a demon chaser, blaming demonic forces for every uncomfortable situation or flaw in someone’s character. But, I am talking about a battle that has been waged long before you and I were born, a battle that is waged against the purposes of God and His Kingdom. It’s a battle that has been waged by the enemy of your soul.

In Revelation 12:9-12 we see the allegory of the dragon waging war against the woman and her offspring. Verse 17 says, “Then the dragon became angry at the woman, and he declared war against the rest of her children—all who keep God’s commandments and confess that they belong to Jesus.” That’s every believer on the earth! We are in a spiritual fight whether we understand it or not! Whether we like it or not it’s a battle!

There’s no time to relax on our blessed assurance allowing the enemy to steal the victory that Christ has already won for us on the cross (tweet)All through scriptures we are instructed in spiritual warfare and not be afraid. Moses gives principles concerning warfare to the children of Israel in Deut. 20. He starts off in verse 1 by saying “When you go out to battle against your enemies”. It’s important to realize that it doesn’t say “if you go out to battle” but “when you go”.

In 1Tim 6:12 Paul exhorts young Timothy to “Fight the good fight of faith”. Again in 2 Tim 2:3-5 we read, “You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him…”. We have been called and enlisted by Jesus Himself. Therefore, it’s no time to relax on our blessed assurance and allow the devil to steal the victory that Christ has already won for us on the cross.

Not only is the believer a target for the fiery darts of the demonic, but is faced with obstacles and conflict that manifest in the natural. If we’re not careful through the commotion we can loose sight of who we are actually in a battle with. Evidently, the church members at Ephesus were in that situation themselves. So the apostle Paul takes the time to include in his letter to them the explanation of who we are actually fighting against. He also writes to the Corinthians bringing understanding to believers about this spiritual fight. We read in 2 Cor. 10:3-4, “Though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God…”

Once we recognize who we are in a battle against then it becomes clear that earthly and temporal weapons are useless. The believer must be spiritually minded if he is going to be effective in spiritual warfare.

There are four important areas of spiritual warfare that all believers need to understand and walk in. For the sake of memory I will refer to these as the four “A’s” of spiritual warfare—attitude, authority, armor and artillery. We will cover these four different points over the following weeks.
